It appears that Steve is about to take yet another new direction in his professional life. We have just received the following notice.

To all –

Wanted to share some great news. As of this week, I will be moving to an advisory role with Finworth Mortgage and stepping out of day to day operation and mortgage origination. Those responsibilities will fall to the very capable hands of long time Finworth folks Alyce Scrivner and David Coldiron.

Finworth was started nearly 6 years ago. Thanks to your faith in us we were able to build a fine company - one that was even able to survive the very tough environment of the past year. Our parent company InsBank has been instrumental in that success and they continue to be a strong outlet for commercial loans and business banking clients. The Guilty

Released in 2000 by Lions Gate, the Bill Pullman crime thriller The Guilty, features the song Dilated Eyes performed by his group Lackey. It can be found at about 8:18 and then again at 1:03:25 in the movie. It’s actually a pretty good movie and it can be found used on Amazon in both DVD and VHS.

This guy left the music business and a Capitol Records deal nearly 10 years ago. I lost touch with him - but heard he was playing again. He seemed relaxed and happy - and his songs were awsome as usual. One bonus - this time he had some really great musicians playing with him. In his previous acoustic duo and his previous band - there was no really good guitar playing. The guy he had with him this time was off the hook. From what he said that night - my guess is he will not play again for several more years...why do the good ones stay home? Steve! If you read this - make another record at least! Or play a concert or something!

I wasn't the most excited when Steve announced to me that he was going to abandon C&M to chase the dream to become a rock star with a new project called Lackey (yes as my son pointed out it was first to have been called Drywall but the name had already been taken).

It wasn't that I didn't like the new material and sound. It was amazing just like everything Steve set out to do. I just felt it was a mistake for Steve to abruptly close the C&M project and loose track of all of the thousands of fans that had made a connection with his music. Lackey was very risky. Nobody had heard of Lackey and they would be loosing good income from the very loyal C&M base. His vision was to put a band together with his close friends (now being married to four band mates instead of one), produce a short EP demo to show off the new band to an as of yet unknown record label with deep pockets and get his new benefactor to shell out the big bucks to make them all rock stars.

Now keep in mind that NOBODY had heard of some new band called Lackey, they did produce a great EP that they gave away by the thousands, they had no back story or fan base (hell, they hadn't even played a show together yet as a band) and no radio play, but some unknown benefactor was going to dump a million dollars on something tat was at this point just a dream, not bloody likely. It's just not done that way.

In the mean time Steve didn't completely give up his roots. He played three sold out solo performances. But his original partner, Matt Maher, had already got bitten by the rock star bug and declined to participate. Matt had decided that the old act wasn't cool any more but being a rock star was. As the hunt for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow continued it was consuming more and more of Steve's energy (and financial resources) and his successful solo career has put aside to devote his entire focus on the increasingly expensive and time consuming search for a record deal.

But the search was taking it's toll on the band. Steve had the band crisscrossing the country arranging meetings with industry insiders following up on every lead he uncovered no matter how small. Steve was introduced to an entertainment lawyer from L.A. by the name of Leslie Frank by their licensing agent BMI. She was beginning catalyst for the groups performing in public by arranging a date at L.A.'s famed Opium Den and then NY's Brownies. Of course all of this was 'pay to play' engagements and sometime they had to rent the hall outright and the fees they were charged rose with the industry buzz. Drummers and bass players came and went but Steve and his two original partners, Matt Maher from C&M and Grey Garner an old college friend, slowly began creating a buzz inside the industry. The result of all of this work was, as Matt later accusingly proclaimed, that Steve shrewdly negotiated an unprecedented multi-album, million dollar record contract with Capital Records becoming one of the oldest in age new artists ever signed to the label. So they all packed up and rolled into L.A. to become rock stars. Mission Accomplished?

Let's just say then that long standing differences of opinion that were obfuscated during the hunt for success came rushing into the open once the big money hit the table and the band didn't survive the melee that ensued. The album was never released and the band never played together again.

But how did I get here? Oh yah. "I Told Steve He Needed A Hot Guitarist." Although Grey had his charms, lending a moody guitar musical background the bands sound, his moodiness also spilled over into the band in other ways on and off stage. But Steve is fiercely loyal to his friends and wouldn't consider a change. But think of what might have been if Steve had brought in a real, honest to god, hot rock-n-roll lead guitar player.

Well wonder no more. He finally did just that this April at his 12th and Porter show in Nashville and here is the result.

Steven Douglas Curnutte, born October 21, 1967 in Charleston, West Virginia is an American songwriter and artist from the 1990's turned entrepreneur. Following graduation from Wake Forest University in 1991, Curnutte released 11 independent records and toured nationally along the college circuit before signing to Capitol Records in Los Angeles. Curnutte was part of the cultural trend towards acoustic guitar and singer songwriter music following the grunge rock explosion of the early 90's. Accolades and accomplishments include winner of the New Folk Finalist Award at the storied Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas, writer of top 20 songs for other artists such as the song Nickajack for The River Road Band, and writer of songs for major movies such as the song Dilated Eyes for the Bill Pullman movie 'The Guilty.' He was a performer on the famous radio program Mountain Stage. Curnutte was also part of the Do It Yourself (DIY) trend of the mid 90's that was fueled by the emergence of the Internet. He founded Yatata Publishing and Marengo Records and later sold them toward the end of the decade.

Since the end of the 1990's, Curnutte founded and sold a financial services company, mortgage company, and title company in Tennessee and has become embedded in the entrepreneurial start up scene of the region. He has served as local President of the world wide Entrepreneurs' Organization (2006), spoken on the topic of the recent credit crisis at Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management, provided expert witness services in area of investment property lending, and maintained an economics blog at Economics Blog. He currently owns Finworth Mortgage, a residential lender operating in Tennessee and Florida. He also owns and operates Finworth Commercial which specializes in commercial and SBA lending nationwide.

Back on Stage

It was a sold out - standing room only - event as Steve performed in a rare appearance at 12th and Porter in downtown Nashville. What a special night. Steve has never sounded better. His set list included many of his old favorites and new material. He debuted several amazing new songs. For those of you that were unable to be there, the performance was both video and audio recorded. We are looking forward to a release of both in the very near future. He is also planning another concert in Nashville sometime in late September or October. We will announce the details as soon as we have them.

Steve Is Back

No your eyes are not playing tricks on you, Steve is playing a show! A solo show at that, in Nashville. From what I know its a single show and no others have been planned up to this point. So if you are anywhere in the area I suggest you check it out. There is a good chance I will be there for the night because its such a rare occurrence these days. I will post more info as I get it. For now though I do know that the time has been pushed back to 8:00pm I believe.

In other news I am happy to announce that Steve's entire music catalogue will be added to itunes and other online music shops soon! They will all be available in about a month and a half if all goes according to plan but be sure that I will post any news about that as I get it.

Welcome to the new and improved Steve Curnutte Websource. This is a fan run site of the musician Steve Curnutte. I have been listening to his music for over half of my life and its always managed to follow me wherever I go so I thought it would be fitting to take charge of the web presence of the great singer. Through a few connections in my life I have been lucky enough to be closely involved with Steve during parts of his carrier and so I have access to images, old unreleased songs, and other sorts of things that are hard to come by these days.

His music has been out of print for some time now and so I am happy to slowly share songs with other fans that may have wondered what happened to the man behind the music.

This site will be a constant work in progress and always be changing and updated with news and content as I have time and as news comes into light. Through some recent contact with Steve he has agreed to listen back through some of his old music and write up some short stories about specific songs and I will be posting them in the Music area of the site. At first I will simply be posting songs one at a time with a story but eventually I may be able to have a chance to make full albums available here so who knows what will happen. The best thing you could do is just check back here for updates as time rolls along.

At any rate, I hope that everyone finds something new or interesting here on the site, feel free so send me along a mail and let me know your thoughts and suggestions.
